the retailer’s supplied information overstates the ultra-rapid burner's output as up to 4kW; Smeg's exact model specification lists it at 3.50kW.
Design and layout
The Smeg PX364LMB gas hob uses a traditional 60cm built-in format with a matt-black enamelled surface, front-mounted matt-black rotary controls and cast-iron pan supports. Its four-burner layout provides a good spread of burner sizes, including auxiliary, semi-rapid, rapid and ultra-rapid positions.
The cast-iron supports should give saucepans and frying pans a stable platform, while the dark finish creates a coordinated look with other black or Classic-style kitchen appliances. The 40mm appliance height is relatively straightforward for standard worktop installation, subject to the specified cut-out dimensions.
Cooking performance
The burner specification is well balanced for everyday cooking. The ultra-rapid burner is rated at 3.50kW for boiling and high-heat cooking, while the 2.60kW rapid burner provides a useful second high-output option. The 1.80kW semi-rapid and 1.10kW auxiliary burners are better suited to simmering, sauces and smaller pans.
The total gas connection rating is 9.0kW. Smeg specifies suitable pan diameters of 12–18cm for the auxiliary burner, 14–24cm for the semi-rapid burner, 20–26cm for the rapid burner and 20–30cm for the ultra-rapid burner.
Controls and safety
Each burner is operated from a front rotary knob, with electronic ignition activated by pressing and turning the control. This avoids the need for a separate lighter, although the knob must be held in briefly after ignition so the thermocouple can heat up.
Gas safety valves are fitted to shut off the gas supply if a flame is accidentally extinguished. The combination of automatic ignition and flame-failure protection gives the hob a useful level of everyday convenience and reassurance.
Installation and ownership
The hob is specified for G20 natural gas and is supplied with alternative G30 LPG nozzles and a conical gas connection. Gas and electrical connections should be completed by authorised personnel, and the manufacturer specifies a single-phase electrical connection rather than a fitted plug.
The required worktop cut-out is 478–482mm by 555–560mm. The hob is therefore a conventional built-in replacement only where the existing aperture is compatible. Smeg lists a wok support as an optional accessory rather than a supplied item.
